Faith in Real Life

Cain Wasn’t Abel
Hebrews 11:1–4

“By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain…” — Hebrews 11:4 (ESV).

When you think of the first faith story in the Bible, who comes to mind? Maybe Abraham or Moses? But Hebrews 11 starts with Abel — the brother of Cain.

Both brothers brought offerings to God. Both were religious. Both showed up to worship.

But only one obeyed in faith.

Hebrews tells us Abel’s offering was accepted because it was offered by faith. Genesis helps us see the contrast. When God did not accept Cain’s offering, He warned him. He spoke to him directly. He gave him the opportunity to respond, to humble himself, to change course.

Abel trusted God enough to obey.
Cain did not.

Instead of responding with obedience, Cain chose anger. Instead of surrender, he chose resistance. Instead of trusting God’s correction, he rejected it. His story isn’t just about a rejected sacrifice — it’s about refusing to obey when God speaks.

That’s where this hits close to home.

It’s possible to go through the motions spiritually and still resist obedience. It’s possible to bring an “offering” — time, service, words — but hold back our hearts. Faith isn’t just believing God exists. It’s trusting Him enough to obey when He corrects us.

Abel obeyed in faith. Cain didn’t.

Big difference.

Reflect:
• Is there any area of your life where God has been correcting or prompting you — and you’ve resisted?
• What would obedience look like for you this week?

Pray:
God, when You speak, help me respond with humility instead of defensiveness. I don’t want to resist You. Teach me to obey in faith.

Scripture Reading – Hebrews 11:1–4 (ESV):

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
2 For by it the people of old received their commendation.
3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
4 By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.
